!b! It's important to practise this technique under trained supervision. There's no substitute for practical knowledge & experience. !n! This section sets out to describe {mouth to mouth} resuscitation. However, before using this life-saving procedure, you must learn & practise the technique under qualified supervision.
The patient is placed on their back on firm surface. 2 breaths are given, sealing your lips with patient's.
The {airway} is checked that it is clear. Another breath is given & the chest wall observed. It should rise to a maximum - if it doesn't, the airway is checked again. The {carotid pulse} is checked regularly & mouth to mouth respirations continued until spontaneous {breathing} is established.
The rate of artificial breathing is maintained at 12-14 breaths/min. However, if the pulse stops a technique called {external cardiac compression} is needed.
